Our Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Faculty Fellows program brings together faculty from across disciplines to engage in scholarly inquiry focused on teaching and student learning. Fellows work collaboratively to explore questions related to teaching practices, student learning, curriculum, assessment, and other areas of higher education and to develop meaningful SoTL projects.

Program Goals

The goals of the SoTL Faculty Fellows Program are to:

• • Enhance teaching practices and student learning
  • Promote scholarly approaches to teaching, course design, assessment, and evaluation
  • Foster reflective, evidence-informed teaching practices
  • Build interdisciplinary connections and collaborations around teaching and learning
  • Support faculty in developing scholarship that can lead to presentations, publications, and other scholarly products

What Fellows Will Do

Over the course of the three-semester program, Fellows will:

• • Work collaboratively with colleagues from across disciplines
  • Explore current issues and questions related to teaching and student learning
  • Develop and conduct a SoTL project within one of the program’s areas of focus
  • Receive support and feedback throughout the development and implementation of their project
  • Share findings through presentations, publications, or other scholarly products
  • Become part of a community of scholarly educators at Southern Miss

Spring 2027 Areas of Focus

The next SoTL Faculty Fellows cohort will begin in Spring 2027. Fellows will work in interdisciplinary research teams centered around one of three areas:

• • AI in Higher Education
  • Preparing Workforce-Ready Students
  • Student Engagement and Belonging

Within these broad areas, Fellows will identify specific questions related to teaching and student learning and collaboratively develop a SoTL project.

Who Should Apply?

Faculty from all disciplines who are interested in investigating questions about teaching and student learning are encouraged to apply. You do not need to have a fully developed research question or previous SoTL research experience to participate. Fellows should come with an interest in one of the identified areas and a willingness to learn, collaborate, and contribute to a research team.

Program Commitment

The Spring 2027 SoTL Faculty Fellows cohort will participate in the program for three semesters. During Spring 2027, Fellows will meet every other Monday from 3:00–4:30 p.m. in the Center for Faculty Development to collaborate, develop their projects, share progress, and receive feedback and support.

Spring 2027 Meeting Dates: February 1 and 22; March 8 and 22; April 5 and 19.

Fellows are expected to come prepared and actively participate in program meetings throughout the three-semester experience.
